Compendium of Light:  Belore, Prayers of Happiness and Thanks

image

On my knees, I humble myself before you Belore

Come to my side, be my guide

Shine down on me with your light

With all the warmth and love you provide

I will keep my head up, my heart open

As my desires to you are spoken

I call to thee, radiant god of the sun

Fill me with your fire

Come to me, guide me

That I may never leave your light.

Dear Light, Dear Belore

By you we live

With your Light and guidance we thrive

We give to you,

Our thanks

And to you we dedicate this meal

For you we will leave a chair set at the head of our table.

Belore, dear sun, radiant mother of phoenixes

We give our thanks

Fires of change

Consume me

Eat my doubts, my worries, my fears

Set me free

So i may be the man I need to be

As Belore wills it, so shall it be.

She walks in the sky

Belore’s steps make no sound

Leaving burning fire in her wake

From a cloud covered sky

She extends her hand and beckons.

She whispers your name on the sea breeze

Once you’ve met her

You’re never the same

I give my praise to Belore

Raising my voice in prayer

To the brightest star in the sky

May the wind carry my words to your ears

Belore, I offer my words to you

As I feed your holy fire.

Feeding it, strengthening it, feeling your warmth

Bright fire, holy fire, convey my words to Belore

The Light that guides us home

Born in the morning only to die when the night comes and the sun falls into the sky

Bringer of Light

Showering your children with your warmth

Kind Mother

Seeing the plants grow beneath her tender care

Raging Warrior

Filled with seething fury unrivaled

Clever Mage

Making the stars and wind dance with only a whisper.

Who can understand a god like Belore?

There is no need.

God of the Sun

You came forth from the void to give birth to the stars

You are the source of the Light

Our beginning

And when all things end, you too, will be there

Lover of all, giver of Light

God and Goddess, Mystery and revelation

Praise Belore

May all praise the God most holy!

Fire Burn, great Belore

You dance across the sky

You help the plants grow, chase winter away

You give us magic

You give us children

That love us and play in the land you gave us

Radiant God and Goddess of Spring!

Warrior of retribution, loving parent

God of Fire, God of magic

Giver of life

May all praise Belore

God and Goddess of the sun!

Wise Mother, Stern Father

Warrior, Mage, Healer,

We love you, and you love us

We are your blessed children

Give us your blessings

And hold us in your arms

Praise the Eternal Sun

Protector of life and mgaic

Dancing God, Singing God

Bringer of Dawn, reborn each day anew

Mother and Father

We love and thank you

Clothed in brillant fire

Peaceful, gentle

Rage, and unbridled power

Laughing brightly

Crying when we cry

Radiant and eternal

You walk through the sky and we rejoice

Compendium of Light: The Festival of Light and the truimph of the Darkness

It is a holiday that has not been celebrated in centuries. For a long time I did not celebrate it simply for lack of others around to celebrate it with. But now I write this down in hope others will celebrate it with me.

It is time for the Fire Festivals to begin soon and that will see the sun at the highest point in the sky. Midsummer is the time when we can celebrate the growth of crops, taking pride in our work. It is a time to celebrate the elven sun God Belore (Or the Light, take your pick of either.), and spending as much time as you can outdoors while Belore is at their strongest in the sky.

Festival Colors

This celebration is all about the sun. Yellows and golds, oranges and fiery reds of any shade are all appropriate for celebration wear. Bright sunny colored candles are left as offerings and colorful cloths are frequently tied to unattended poles. The cloth, I am told was part of a fertility rite but as to what my mentor did not recall and after several centuries neither can I.

Sun and Light Based Symbols

The festival is supposed to be celebrated when the sun is at the highest point above us. In some stories the sun rolls across the sky like a wheel or is pulled by a chariot. Circles and discs of beaten metals are seen on old gravestones as long as I can remember.

When I was younger I recall a witch at one celebration. “Sunflowers, daisies, dandelions, chamomile, oak tree acorns, sandalwood, frankincense, and bloodthistle!” She told me, are proper offerings an used more frequently at midsummer. They seek the sun out more than other plants do and absorb more of its magic. Is it true? I am no herbalist. But if one were to ask of metalsmithing I would know.

A battle between the Light and the Dark.

Midsummer is when the sun is at its strongest but in six months the days will grow short (And if you’re outside of Quel’thas.) winter’s chill will creep into the air as the crone exhales.

Much like the battle between Armand the Bright and Holly the Burning, Light and Dark will battle for supremacy. At this point the darkness will win and the days will grow short as the Light is forced to give ground to regain strength. If you are so inclined you may decorate your altars and supplement your offerings with symbols of the victory that the dark has won. Fire and water, dark stones and light stones. ideally such offerings would be more than the ones to the Light.

Compendium of Light: The Time Worn Path(6)

“- All rivers do not have to end but eventually they must bend. It is saddening to hear that your mentor Armand is dead. But as you have had no talent with the art of war or shapeshifting I do not know if I would make a adequate replacement….-I would recommend you stay on your current path Novice.”

When my mentor died I cremated his remains and I did contact the other members I knew. So few were they that it took months before I had a response from enough to satisfy me. My mentor’s loss was mourned but those that remained either were unwilling to take me on as their novice or politely declined my requests. They were willing to provide me with information and let me to interpret it as I will and to guide me to what would become my mentor’s resting place.

The area now known as Eastern Plaguelands was once populated by bountiful farms and small villages and called Eastweld. Those familiar with the maps will note of the mountains. It was there I took my mentor. Carrying him in a small urn with my waterproof cloak wrapped carefully around it.  Dornoll, Cathbad, Amergin, and Bodmail awaited me when I arrived and it was them who guided me through a small cave entry that barely fit two men side by side. These other members of the Spiral spoke almost nothing to me as they guided me to our destination. Our destination was a large cavern where part of the ceiling had collapsed to allow in the outside world. Our every step echoed as we approached the altar.

The Light is multifaceted. Do you remember what I told you about there being no one true Tyleril? The same is true for the light. I worship the Sun Goddess who speaks to me and once I bore her blessings with me into battle. I was nigh unstoppable, raining down cold burning fury and- ah. The good days before my heart started to fail me. One day I’ll take you to our sacred place. We used to have countless sacred sites, but time and long gone enemies have reduced us to one.

It is impossible to describe the feelings you experience in there so I’ll tell you the basics. The Gods were once bountiful with their blessings when we were numerous and farther spread out. Each person who carried the blessing of their God would return to our sacred site when they felt death coming. The blessing would be set there for the next one worthy to bear the burden…

It would be more accurate to say there had once been several altars. The design of a spiral was carved onto the floor of the cave and nine altars were placed around it, with one in the center. Each altar, I had noticed had been damaged. Some looked like they had been worn away by time, others looked as if someone had taken a hammer to them.  Cathbad took time to silently point towards the altar on the farthest left. It had split in twain. Amergin next to my ear whispered my mentor had carried the blessing the altar had once held.

The ceremony that they sent my master off with was simple and soft. Voices never going beyond a soft keening wail. Armand was loved and I saw it etched in the faces of those present.

If the blessing cannot be given back when the Priest dies then the stone that held it breaks. Sometimes even when the Priests were able to return the blessing to the sacred site their successor could not bear the burden. And over time we have lost much. But fear not! Things change. With you as my novice I think the Spiral could continue on in some form…

There are some vows that cannot be broken.  Some promises that you should not ever make because they will force you to pay up when payment is due. Some trades you should not make, some deals you cannot make.

I was not wise enough to keep that in mind.

To swear by the Light is no trivial promise. It is promising something in the face of the Light that it will be done. And if it is not? You will suffer the consequences of breaking your obligation. Never take one that you cannot or will not fulfill. Remember the tale of Dalor and how he was burnt to ash for breaking his, Novice, and see to it you are never forced to suffer the same fate…

The Spiral etched onto the cavern’s floor once held twelve blessings. Each stone was heavily magicked- each bore shining runes and intricate designs that were old. Strong enough to hold a blessing only those devoted to the Light and blessed by it would ever obtain. Perhaps some time ago the Spiral had more stones like this. But by the time I entered the cavern that day there were only two stones that were intact. All others were damaged.

Looking back now, centuries later I think they had found a way to extract the blessings of the Light. But unlike the Blood Knights they found some way to keep them  and continue passing them on, thus ensuring that the strong among them were even more so. But I have no idea how they were able to do it. I only know that whoever bore a blessing obtained from the stones had to return it before their death or the blessing was lost and the stone that was held it damaged.

One of the things I remember my mentor saying was ‘I don’t want to die yet!’ when I had teased Armand of a human’s short lifespan. Armand had laughed then and we joked back and forth like the pair we had become. Now, even centuries after the words haunt me as I remember his face. Maybe it was the blessing that had killed him, a burden that grew to heavy for his heart.

There’s so much I’ll never know. The members of the Spiral used these blessings for their own benefit, that much is obvious. The Light does not bless everyone so generously. Only the most devout and strong among us could hope for the Light to shine down on us so.

That day, I started the path I could not leave. I swore an oath to the Light I could not break.

But that, is for me to write another day.

Compendium of Light: Sacrifices and Offerings

Prays are sometimes, but not all the time, accompanied by offerings. At many churches, altars in the woods and so on, you’ll find coins, incense, water, liqour and so on. Because it is important, I will begin with sacrifice. Scholars have argued over the years with no resolution on the ‘why’ of sacrifice. I think many scholars have seen sacrifice through the lens of their own ideology, the culture they study the most, or their own culture. A nihlist would find a nihlistic meaning, a mage who studied ancient higborne culture will apply nightborn meaning. But they all view sacrifice as a single thing. it is a single thing one in the sense sacrifice is one thing. But there is no single meaning to sacrifice; there is several.

Sacrifice is giving something to the Divine. Whethe rit is Elune, the Light, the Sunwell, or any other diety. The origin of the word sacrifice means to ‘make sacred’. In everyday speech we use it as giving something up and that is how we use it. (I.E. “He sacrificed himself” or “I sacrificed my time.”)A religious sacrifice however, is not giving up. It is giving to. It is not ‘I’m great for depriving myself’, but ‘I am glad to give my Divine whatever they want’.

Often, however, there are questions on sacrifice and what one can give. The greater value an item has to you, that is yours to give, has value in the eyes of the divine. But once you have given that item up then it will not have value in the eyes of the divine again. Consumed, for lack of a better word. Another sacrifice that can be given is blood. There is a saying  of ‘ blood is life’. Be careful not to give to much!

Worldwide, offerings are given to the dead and to those associated with it to show love, appease, and offer something to those we have lost that are no longer with us. For the dead be careful not to offer up things that can be twisted towards harmful ends such as magical items. As good as your intentions might be there is always someone with bad intent.

Some will argue sacrifices are obsolete in this day and age.But should it be considered obsolete? When does a religious practice become obsolete? Many have become distant from religion and find the idea of sacrificing to a Divine distasteful. Who wants to sacrifice their lover’s beloved bow or robes to the fire and to lose that forever? Or to cut themselves and give a dusty altar blood?

Symbolic sacrifice is also something worth considering. Something else named as valuable and treated as one.  Bread has always been the most common substitute. Libations are the most common offering you will see. They can be any drink, although alcoholic spirits are the most common. Left in their bottle, or a glass, or poured . Distilled drinks make good offerings since they burn well, however, be careful for sudden flare ups. Oils and Butter are also acceptable.

Don’t pour anything with a low alchohol content or none at all onto a fire. It will dampen or put the fire out- never good for a ritual or ceremony. Instead pour it at the base.

Some offerings can’t be burned or poured. But problem; coins, jewelry, weapons, and armor can be cast into water or buried. Here we find another meaning of sacrifice: to give something over to the Divine.

Every thing thing about your prayer makes a differnece. Prose, poem, emotion, belief, your strength of will, what you’ll sacrifice for it- all of these matter. Different choices will give you different results.

Valor, and all the virtues that go along with it, are like rare minerals: you must cherish them when you find them because of their value, but you must also take time to harvest them… refine them. When mixed together properly, a strong alloy is formed, sometimes unbreakable by even the most powerful blows.

This strength, your faith, your bravery, must be tested. You must learn to never lose faith and realize that with the power of the Light, you can overcome things that most others cannot.

Tome of Valor

In all things, paladins must reflect the Light, which supplements our strength. To strive to be divine for one of our kind does not mean we strive for godhood–we strive to be good in all actions.

Although called upon to smite evil in these harsh times, you must always remember that it’s aiding others that will truly set you apart from the other citizens. Compassion, patience, bravery–these things mean as much to a paladin as strength in battle.

Know this well, and never forget it.

  • “The enemy’s shadowy cunning is no match for the pure insight of the light.” – Judgment of Wisdom

Compendium of Light: Quel’thalas

tyleril-silversword:

Let us all pray for happiness
To love one another
to help each other
For us all to receive the Blessing of the Sunwell
To give us strength and fortitude
To withstand what Fate throws our way.
Let none of us hunger.
Or suffer

The Sunwell overflows with blessings for us all
May the Sunwell bless you.
May this blessing keep you safe when danger comes
May this blessing steady your hand
May this blessing comfort you when you are feeling low
May this blessing comfort you when you are weak.
May the Sunwell flow through you.
You are chosen, you are magic, you are blessed, you are Sin’dorei.
May the Sunwell’s sacred waters flow
forever in my heart

May Quel’thalas prosper
such is my greatest desire.
May my heart sing with ecstasy
at the sight of my home
May my life be an offering
for my home

May my heart bleed at the sight
Of the wretched, the poor, and the wounded
may I never become jaded to their suffering and pain

May I be there to show the path
to those seeking one
But if they should not hearken to me
May I have the patience to wait

The Sunwell surrounds us
The Sunwell flows through us
The Sunwell enfolds us
The Sunwell protects us
Wherever we are, so is the Sunwell
And all is well

The Light surrounds us
The Light Enfolds us
The Light Protects us
The Light watches over us
Wherever we are, the Light is
And all goes well.

If I am the present
Then you are the future
If I am beaten and broken
You are strong and ready to stand tall
If I grow bitter and jaded
May you grow wise and compassionate
My dearest child
I pray for a future you can thrive in

Grant, oh Sunwell, your protection
And in protection strength
and in strength, wisdom
and in wisdom, justice
and in justice, kindness
and out of kindness, love
And in that love, the love of all
The Sunwell and goodness
